Appearance plays a significant role in the acceptance of photovoltaic systems. Solar modules installed on roofs without any sense of aesthetics can disturb the overall appearance. All the more pleasing are PV systems that are installed symmetrically and cover a wide area. But even if aesthetics are a goal, it is often simply not possible because module and roof dimensions do not match. Then it is an advantage if a manufacturer offers photovoltaic modules in different formats and performance classes that can be combined. This is possible with the high-performance HIT® modules from Panasonic. They can be combined in any way so that not only the appearance is right, but also the maximum solar yield can be extracted from the roof. The Wellens family's new photovoltaic system is a successful example of this.
The Wellens family lives in a single-family house built in 2000, which they bought in 2016. With a PV system, they want to become less dependent on energy suppliers and rising electricity costs. "Photovoltaics make it much easier to calculate energy costs for the next few decades," says Dirk Wellens. They are reassured by Panasonic's 25-year product warranty, one reason they chose modules HIT®.
Visual and technical upgrade of the house
To generate as much PV power as possible, Dirk Wellens and his wife Julia wanted to occupy as much roof space as possible. Panasonic modules were ideal for this. Their installer André Steinebach, managing director of H-S-E-Tec GmbH in Hückelhoven, North Rhine-Westphalia, recommended that they combine HIT® modules in two power classes. The roof's left side accommodated nine modules with 295 watts of power each, while the right side has 22 modules with 330 watts. In total, the PV system has 9.915 kilowatts of power. This puts it just below the 10 kW threshold, above which a pro-rata EEG levy would have been incurred for the self-used solar power. "The solution is optimal for us," Dirk Wellens is pleased. "We have fully utilized the roof." In addition, the house is now "more valuable," he adds. "It has not only been upgraded technically but also visually. "
Combination of solar power system and PV battery
The PV system was combined with a storage system. This enables the Wellens family to cover around 70 percent of their annual electricity requirements with solar power. In the sunny late summer weeks, they have already managed to get up to 95 percent on some days.
However, they also influence this themselves. "We have changed our daily routine a bit," the 38-year-old says. "We make sure to use as much solar power directly as possible. We now turn on the washing machine, dryer, and dishwasher when the sun is shining, if possible."
The photovoltaic system has been connected to the grid since mid-May. And the Wellens family is thrilled: "The summer was brilliant. It was really fun to watch the solar yield and consumption." They plan to purchase a hybrid car soon. Of course, that will also run on solar power.
André Steinebach is also satisfied with this solution. He has combined different power classes of HIT® modules in other PV installations before and is pleased with the appealing appearance.
